<p><a href="https://eventhorizontelescope.org/press-release-april-10-2019-astronomers-capture-first-image-black-hole">La prima foto di sempre ad un buco nero</a> è stata ottenuta trasferendo dati su hard drive inviati su normali voli commerciali.</p>
<p>Hanno preso gli hard drive, li hanno impacchettati e li hanno spediti per via aerea. Un po’ come i pacchi degli studenti fuori sede, con all&#8217;interno la pasta Divella perché è noto che a Milano non vendono la pasta nei supermercati.</p>
<p>Sembra una cosa insensata: con il 5G alle porte, internet che si insinua in ogni aspetto della vita e quasi tutto può essere trasferito in un istante dall&#8217;altra parte del globo.</p>
<p>Esatto, quasi tutto! <strong>Uno dei progetti più all&#8217;avanguardia del mondo ha un grosso problema: </strong>ha troppi dati ed un messaggio WhatsApp non va bene.</p>

<h2>La prima foto di un buco nero è quasi tutta nera</h2>
<p>L’<a href="https://eventhorizontelescope.org/press-release-april-10-2019-astronomers-capture-first-image-black-hole">immagine del 10 Aprile 2019 è già storia</a> perché un buco nero per definizione inghiotte qualsiasi cosa, anche la luce. È impossibile fotografare qualcosa che non emette o riflette luce, ma il progetto <a href="https://eventhorizontelescope.org/">EHT (Event Horizon Telescope)</a> ci è riuscito, o meglio, ci è quasi riuscito.</p>
<p>Event Horizon Telescope è una collaborazione internazionale che realizza un telescopio virtuale di dimensioni terrestri <a href="http://news.mit.edu/2019/mit-haystack-first-image-black-hole-0410">utilizzando 8 antenne radio (radiotelescopi) dislocate in 4 continenti</a>.</p>

<p>Nella pratica, gli 8 radiotelescopi, <em>fotografano</em> le emissioni radio di tutto quello che viene inghiottito nel buco nero, con l&#8217;obiettivo di osservare l&#8217;ambiente circostante di un buco nero.</p>
<p><strong>L’immagine che è stata ottenuta rappresenta quello che viene chiamato <em>l’orizzonte degli eventi di un buco nero</em>.</strong> Da cui il nome del progetto Event Horizon Telescopi, abbreviato EHT.</p>

<p><strong><em>L</em><em>’orizzonte degli eventi di un buco nero appare come </em>un anello luminoso </strong>formato mentre la luce si piega nell&#8217;intensa gravità attorno al buco nero che in questo caso è 6,5 miliardi di volte più massiccio del Sole.</p>
<p>Questa immagine fornisce una delle <a href="https://eventhorizontelescope.org/press-release-april-10-2019-astronomers-capture-first-image-black-hole">prove più forti fino ad oggi dell&#8217;esistenza di buchi neri supermassicci</a>.</p>
<h2>5 Petabyte di dati per un buco nero</h2>
<p><strong class="evidenziato">Oltre alla complessità scientifica del progetto, quelli dell’EHT hanno un grosso problema pratico, quasi imbarazzante.</strong></p>
<p>I dati provenienti dagli 8 telescopi, per essere elaborati, devono essere inviati a due istituti di astronomia: l&#8217;<a href="https://www.haystack.mit.edu/">Osservatorio Haystack del MIT</a> negli Stati Uniti e il <a href="https://www.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de/2169/en">Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy</a> in Germania.</p>

<p>Sono troppi per essere ragionevolmente trasferiti attraverso connessioni Internet, quindi l&#8217;EHT ha utilizzato un metodo piuttosto inusuale detto <a href="https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sneakernet"><em>Sneakernet</em></a>.</p>

<p>Gli hard drive sono stati estratti dai computer, impacchettati e spediti per via aerea. Centinaia di hard drive hanno preso il volo da e verso gli osservatori utilizzando le più comuni <em><strong>FedEx</strong></em> e <em><strong>UPS</strong></em>. Ho l&#8217;ansia solo a pensarci.</p>

<p>Gli hard drive sono stati alloggiati in pile da 8 moduli che consentiva di registrare i dati su tutte e otto le unità contemporaneamente. Ogni pila dischi, oltre al loro rivestimento personalizzato pesava circa 23 chili.</p>
<p>Il vero problema è stato il viaggio di ritorno degli hard drive pieni. Questo perché, ancora una volta, i dati erano troppi per poter effettuare un backup. Quindi i dischi che volavano fuori dalle stazioni erano gli unici che avevano.</p>

<p>In oltre, avere 8 telescopi in 4 continenti diversi fa si che alcuni percorsi di spedizione siano più complicati di altri, ad esempio Cile e Messico hanno regole più severe su ciò che può attraversare i loro confini.</p>
<p>Secondo l&#8217;<a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2019/04/black-hole-hard-disks-picture/587119/">articolo di The Atlantic</a> la destinazione più difficile è stata quella del Polo Sud in Antartide con spedizioni che dovevano soddisfare specifiche molto dettagliate.</p>
<h3>La vera domanda che mi pongo è, “perché non hanno usato internet” ?</h3>
<p>Il team di Event Horizon Telescpe inizialmente, come è ovvio aspettarsi, ha preso in considerazione l&#8217;idea di usare un servizio di condivisione di file come Dropbox o Amazon ASW, ma a i costi erano troppo elevati a causa dell’enorme quantità dei dati, tanto che il team ha dichiarato che:</p>

<h3>Ma quanto pesa in chilogrammi un Gigabyte?</h3>
<p>Non ho a disposizione la stessa tecnologia di EHT, ma il mio vecchio hard disk esterno di 1,5 terabyte pesa circa 156grammi: circa 0,104grammi per gigabyte.</p>
<p>Sembra poco, ma è pur sempre qualcosa e se consideriamo 5 Petabyte otteniamo circa 5,2 quintali.</p>

<p>I dati hanno un peso ed occupano spazio fisico, ma soprattuto necessitano di energia per essere trasferiti, immagazzinati e mantenuti.</p>
<p>Il 5G non è la soluzione a tutti nostri problemi. Le tecnologie di acquisizione dei dati sembrano correre più veloci del modo in cui riusciamo ad immagazzinarle e trasferirle. Ad esempio l&#8217;iPhone 11 ha 3 fotocamere da 12 Megapixel ed gli schermi 4K necessitano di bande tra 15 ai 25 Mbps per funzionare. Prima o poi dovremo fare <em>trasferimento dei dati in modo sostenibile</em>.</p>
<p>Già ora uno dei limiti dell’applicazione delle intelligenze artificiali è proprio quello dell’enorme quantità di dati necessarie per farle funzionare e di conseguenza: tempi, modalità di trasferimento e acquisizione.</p>
<p>Per questo motivo il 5G sta riscuotendo così tanto interesse. Allo stato attuale rappresenta una svolta per l’applicazione di tecnologie fino ad oggi impensabili da implementare su larga scala e consumer.</p>
<p>Per chiudere se prendessimo la celebre frase &#8220;<em>pesa di più un chilo di piume o di piombo?</em>&#8221; alla luce di questa storia diventerebbe &#8220;<strong class="evidenziato">pesa di più un 1 gigabyte a stato solido o 1 gigabyte su disco magnetico?&#8221;</strong></p>
<p>Oggi la riposta è facile: SSD. Ma è comunque interessante ragionare in termini fisici su qualcosa che solitamente siamo abituati a considerare come intangibile tanto che a mio avviso <strong><em>un giorno dovremo fare i conti con il problema della spazzatura informativa</em></strong>.</p>
