<p>Oggi, gli eventi sportivi non avrebbero la stessa popolarità senza incidenti e ammettiamolo, chi è che non si è mai ritrovato a vagare su <a href="https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=russian+camera+car">YouTube a guardare camera-car di russi che si schiantano su qualcosa</a>…</p>

<p>Siamo un po’ stronzi con la tecnologia, lo siamo sempre stati.</p>
<p>Tant&#8217;è che nel 1896, questa nostra bizzarra caratteristica, ha spinto un tizio a lanciare due locomotive l’una contro l’altra, per puro divertimento. Anzi, per scopi pubblicitari!</p>
<p>Come si dice: <strong class="evidenziato">il marketing, quello fatto bene. O forse no&#8230;</strong></p>
<h2><em>Crash at Crush, distruggere per fare marketing</em></h2>
<p>L’ideatore ed organizzatore della geniale trovata pubblicitaria è un tale <span class="evidenziato">William George Crush</span>, <strong>Responsabile del traffico passeggeri</strong> della Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, abbreviata con MK&amp;T o <strong>Katy Railroads.</strong></p>

<p>L&#8217;insolita trovata pubblicitaria è conosciuta come <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crash_at_Crush"><em><strong>Crash at Crush</strong></em></a>, prevedeva lo scontro tra le due vecchie locomotive a vapore allo scopo di pubblicizzare la nuova ferrovia del Texas che andava espandendosi.</p>
<p>Et voilà, l’evento del secolo! A confronto la Ferragni e Fedez alla Terrazza Campari sembrano dei pivelli.</p>
<p><strong class="evidenziato">Nel 19esimo secolo però non c&#8217;era Instagram ed i disastri ferroviari attiravano sempre un sacco di gente. Per questo, George W. C. propose alla Katy di prendere due vecchi locomotori e invece di rottamarli, usarli per organizzare un disastro ferroviario a scopo pubblicitario.</strong></p>
<p>Le capacità persuasive di G. W. Crush superiori a quelle ingegneristiche gli consentirono di convincere i dirigenti della Katy. Così presero due <a href="https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baldwin_Locomotive_Works">locomotive Baldwin</a> (no.1001, no.999), le dipinsero rispettivamente di verde e di rosso brillante, vi collegarono 7 carrozze ciascuna piene zeppe di pubblicità ed iniziarono ad organizzare l&#8217;evento.</p>

<p>Una delle due locomotive per un anno vagò per tutto il Texas pubblicizzando l&#8217;evento, mentre volantini e notizie sui giornali davano aggiornamenti sui preparativi.</p>
<blockquote><p>Per aumentare l’hype, il luogo esatto dell&#8217;evento fu tenuto nascosto fino all’ultimo, un po’ come gli aperi-cena super esclusivi durante la fashion week di Milano.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Crush la città fantasma</h2>
<p>Per l&#8217;occasione venne costruita appositamente una città fantasma ed una linea ferroviaria a circa 15km da <a href="https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waco">Wako</a> con tanto di bancarelle, locali in stile Far West (o se preferite Django di Tarantino) dove il pubblico avrebbe potuto assistere all&#8217;evento mangiando bevendo a volontà.</p>

<p>La finta città fu chiamata <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crash_at_Crush">Crush</a>, da cui <em><strong>Crash at Crush</strong></em> che chiaramente richiamava il nome dell&#8217;organizzatore in una sorta di scioglilingua. L’evento era gratuito e per raggiungerlo bastava acquistare un biglietto per treno al costo di 2$ (50-60$ odierni) valido da qualunque luogo del Texas.</p>

<h2>Great Crash at Crush</h2>
<p>L’organizzazione si aspettava 10-20 mila spettatori, oggi <span class="evidenziato">alcuni documenti stimano che oltre 40.000 persone raggiunsero Crush</span> per assistere alle due locomotive da 32 tonnellate schiantarsi l’una contro l’altra.</p>
<p>Tutto era pronto. Gli ingegneri avevano previsto ogni singolo dettaglio. Avevano predisposto accuratamente transenne e gradinate per seguire l’evento in sicurezza.</p>

<p>Alle ore 17:00 del 15 settembre 1986 la locomotiva no.999 rosso brillante iniziò ad accelerare sempre di più verso la locomotiva no.1001 verde brillante, che a sua volta accelerava in direzione opposta verso la sua gemella.</p>
<p>I documenti descrivono questi istanti con lo stridio delle locomotive e le urla di eccitazione del pubblico, mentre gli ingegneri che avevano avviato le locomotive si lanciavano in <em>sicurezza</em> fuori dalle locomotive prima dello schianto che da li a poco sarebbe avvenuto.</p>
<p>Gli ingegneri si aspettavano uno schianto a circa 58mph con le locomotive che avrebbero formato una sorta di &#8220;V&#8221;, ma qualcosa andò storto.</p>
<p><span class="evidenziato">Strano, chi lo avrebbe mai detto.</span></p>
<h3>Le cose non andarono benissimo</h3>
<p>Le due locomotive si incastrarono una sotto l’altra mentre il peso dei vagoni le fecero accartocciare una contro l’altra, le caldaie esplosero simultaneamente, lanciando vapore bollente, schegge, bulloni, metallo e frammenti vari in fiamme per centinaia di metri verso folla in preda al panico.</p>

<h2>Nonostante tutto <em>Crash at Crush</em> fu un pionieristico evento di marketing</h2>
<p>Sorprendentemente, l&#8217;evento non fu un vero disastro.</p>
<p>Vista la mancata cattiva pubblicità, quando la Katy ebbe risolto tutte le richieste di risarcimento e ripulito la zona dai detriti, riassunse George Crush.</p>

<p>Addirittura pare che ricevette un bonus e lavorò presso la Katy fino al suo pensionamento. Praticamente un eroe.</p>
<p>La città di Crush venne eliminata dalla cartina, ma passò alla storia con una delle storie sul marketing più incredibili del Texas, ma soprattutto aprì la strada agli eventi dove i disastri, gli schianti e le esplosioni sono l’attrazione principale.</p>
<h3>La moda degli eventi basati sulla distruzione</h3>
<p>Anche se l&#8217;evento di marketing <b>Crash at Crush</b> ha sfiorato l&#8217;ecatombe, appena <span class="evidenziato">dopo lo schianto le 40.000 persone che quel giorno avevano pagato per vedere due locomotive schiantarsi corsero verso le locomotive distrutte ancora fumanti reclamando un detrito come souvenir.</span></p>
<p>Nei 40anni successivi al 1986 altre aziende seguirono le orme della Katy organizzando schianti ferroviari a scopi pubblicitari aprendo la strada alle odierne <a href="https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demolition_derby">Demolition Derby</a> o Monster Track.</p>
